Here's the thing: GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network) just released their 2018 National School Climate Survey data which is based on the experiences of over 23,000 school-age students surveyed during the 2017 school year. They have been collecting this data since 1999. This is the first year that there hasn't been a continual reduction in incidences of homophobic and transphobic harassment. In fact, there has been an increase in some forms of anti-LGBTQ+ bias in schools. Here's what they found:
Some schools still lack GSAs (Gender-Sexuality Alliances). Public transportation can be hard to find or expensive, making it hard to participate in activities offered elsewhere. Workplaces, schools, and homes are often hostile environments. There's plenty of negativity and misinformation but few resources to turn to for support.
LGBTQ+ inclusive supports can make a difference. GSAs, supportive educators, LGBTQ+ inclusive curricula, and comprehensive anti-bullying policies all have positive benefits for LGBTQ+ students' success and well-being. With your contribution (no matter how big or small) we can provide resource materials to students, families, and allies. We can provide in-school support for GSAs, social/support groups, opportunities like OPEN MIC NIGHT and Rural PRIDE, and much more!
We are committed to educating local community members and increasing public awareness by building a local network that values and respects everyone - regardless of gender identity, expression, or sexual orientation. We believe it is essential to continue to advocate for equal treatment of LGBTQ+ people in our communities.
We rely on your support to provide resources to every student, family, and ally who needs us. The individuals who generously give every year have helped create Rural Outright. That is why we want to give back to you. With every donation you will receive *FREE* Rural Outright swag (while supplies last). Visit tlcfamilyrc.org/SupportRO for more information.
